Maternal Men

Men will no longer be denied free pregnancy advice following a landmark ruling by the European Court of Justice. Judges in Brussels decided the UK’s current policy of only offering pre-natal support to females contravened equality legislation and was a violation of the basic human rights of the male sex. The ruling means Britain will have until the end of 2012 to adapt to the judgement, which will include offering males NHS funded abortions once they have become pregnant as well as access to a midwife to guide them through to the end stages of childbirth. Men’s groups have welcomed the changes, with president of Male Equality Social Support (MESS) Penile Thrombosis telling The Haddock; “These changes are long overdue and will hopefully mark the end of years of disgraceful discrimination. Previously when a man went to his clinic and told his doctor he was pregnant and was concerned about the consequences of having a caesarean section the typical response would be something along the lines of ‘bugger off and stop wasting my time, you need to see a shrink not a quack – you bloody lunatic.’ That looks set to change thanks to this ruling and that’s good news for men everywhere.â€
